Can a bearing sit correctly if its bore fits but its corner touches a shaft fillet?
The short answer
Not necessarily. A bearing bore can fit the shaft while its corner contacts the shaft fillet before the ring reaches its intended shoulder. That creates apparent seating without the designed abutment. Wind-drivetrain interface review must compare the bearing corner envelope with the actual shoulder transition.
Identify the intended contact surfaces
The bearing ring is normally backed by a defined abutment face in an axially located arrangement. The rounded shaft transition belongs outside the required seating contact. A corner clash can hold the ring away from the flat shoulder and concentrate contact near an edge. Bore diameter alone will not reveal that conflict, and tightening an axial retaining feature does not prove that full seating has occurred.
Read both suppliers’ corner dimensions
A bearing catalogue may give a minimum chamfer dimension and a permitted mating fillet radius. Those labels are not interchangeable drawing radii. The shaft designer must check the actual corner shape and abutment diameters, including any relief specified for the assembly. Do not import another bearing’s numerical recommendation or assume that enlarging a chamfer is harmless: it can change ring support or compromise a component.
Make the fit query a sectional one
Request a cross-section showing bore, fillet, ring chamfer and shoulder face for the specific bearing and shaft. Ask the equipment supplier to confirm the seating method and accepted evidence for that interface. NSK shaft/housing guidance supports abutment accuracy as a bearing-design input, without establishing a MARSTON shaft detail. If interference is suspected, keep the assembly unresolved; do not force seating, machine a relief or grind a bearing corner from a general internet example. A corner-clearance review should use worst permitted mating geometry under the applicable drawings, rather than only the dimensions measured on one favorable sample. Manufacturing variation can change which surface contacts first.
