Small wind / Buyer questions
Mechanical interfaces
Why must a brake mounting bracket be checked separately from brake torque?
The short answer
Because brake torque reaches the machine through a particular mounting force path. A caliper bracket can experience shear, bending and local contact loads determined by its geometry. A brake’s own torque rating does not establish the strength or stiffness of the wind-equipment mounting structure.
Locate the reaction interfaces
For a disc brake, friction force acts at the pad contact and its reaction passes through the caliper and bracket into the support. The force application point and bracket attachments determine local moments. A compact brake and a larger-offset installation can transmit the same shaft torque while imposing different bracket bending. The bracket also needs the manufacturer-specified support and attachment conditions.
Separate disc torque from local force
A hypothetical total tangential force of 2 kN at 0.10 m effective radius gives 200 N m at the shaft. If that force acts with a 0.05 m perpendicular offset from a bracket reference, it also creates a 100 N m moment about that reference under the simplified model. These are different reference moments from the same force, not extra braking capacity. Actual caliper geometry can require a more complete load set.
Request mounting reactions and deflection conditions
Ask the brake supplier for allowable mounting geometry and interface reactions, then have the equipment designer assess the actual bracket and support. Include any required stiffness or disc/caliper alignment constraint, rather than check material strength alone. Mayr brake documentation concerns installation-specific geometry, not MARSTON bracket capacity. Do not assume more attachment bolts solve an unexplained load path or improvise a bracket from brake torque alone. The decision is whether the complete mounted assembly transfers the rated brake load as intended. Bracket stiffness can also affect brake geometry during load application. A strength-only check may miss deflection that disturbs the disc/caliper relationship, so the designer should identify any functional displacement criterion as well as stress limits.
