Can a gearbox output bearing support any pinion that fits its shaft?

The short answer

No. A pinion applies forces to the output shaft, and their position relative to the gearbox bearings affects bending demand. A shaft diameter that accepts the pinion does not prove adequate overhung-load capacity. Torque and external radial/axial loading need their own gearbox checks.

Locate the external force

The same tangential tooth force produces different bending moments when applied at different distances from the output support. A hypothetical 1 kN transverse force acting 0.10 m from a stated reference creates a 100 N m moment about that reference. Moving it to 0.15 m creates 150 N m. These simple moments do not determine internal bearing reactions without the gearbox support geometry.

Read the catalogue load reference

A gearbox’s allowable overhung load may be specified at a particular shaft position, direction, speed and duty. The actual pinion force must be compared using that definition or the maker’s approved conversion. Radial separating force and any axial thrust can be relevant as well as tangential force. A torque-only rating or a test with no attached pinion cannot prove the installed output-bearing load case.

Request a position-specific gearbox selection

Ask for pinion mesh forces, their application point and the manufacturer’s assessment of output shaft/bearing loads in the actual mounting. SEW explicitly separates overhung and axial load review from output torque and provides position-sensitive planning concepts. Those do not establish MARSTON gearbox limits. Do not extend a pinion outward for clearance and assume unchanged capacity. The useful decision is whether the full external load at its real overhang is covered by the selected unit. Where a pinion is moved along the shaft, update the force application point even if its pitch diameter stays unchanged. Tooth force can remain constant while the output shaft’s bending demand changes materially.
