Can a helical gear introduce an axial load absent from a spur-gear estimate?
The short answer
Yes. In a documented single-helical gear mesh, tooth forces can include axial thrust as well as tangential and radial components. A wind-drivetrain bearing arrangement based only on a spur-gear force picture can therefore omit an important directional load.
Relate the force to the actual helix
The inclined tooth contact produces force components tied to helix angle, hand and torque direction under the applicable gear convention. Reversing torque can reverse the associated thrust direction. Do not assign that direction from “clockwise” without a shaft view and helix-hand definition. Other constructions can balance thrust differently, so the single-helical explanation should not be imposed on every gearbox.
Keep all force components in equilibrium
For an illustrative ideal helical mesh, axial-force magnitude is related to tangential force through the tangent of helix angle. Hypothetical 1 kN tangential force with a 20-degree helix gives about 0.364 kN axial force. This is a simplified geometry example, not a gearbox rating or MARSTON load. The actual gear equations, force location and bearing arrangement must be used to determine reactions.
Request the directional bearing-load case
Ask the gearbox designer for tooth force components, helix convention and load cases in both relevant torque directions. Confirm which bearing receives thrust and how its rings transmit that force into the housing. KHK gear-force references support separating components; manufacturer evidence must establish the actual gearbox. Do not add a thrust bearing or reverse a gear from this explanation. The useful decision is whether the support calculation includes the axial force created by the documented mesh geometry. Where torque reverses, preserve the corresponding thrust reversal in the load cases. A bearing arrangement assessed only for forward power flow can otherwise omit the direction that challenges its axial location or retention.
