How should a wind project handle electricity tariffs that may change?

The short answer

A wind-project model should distinguish current documented tariffs, agreed future terms and uncertain price scenarios. Future electricity value can affect the result materially, but a forecast increase is not a confirmed saving. Show the assumptions and test how much the decision depends on them.

Start with the actual present price structure

Record the relevant energy charges, timing rules and treatment of export using the site's current documents. Keep fixed charges and other bill elements separate from costs that wind generation can actually avoid. A high total bill divided by kWh may not represent the marginal value of generation.

Identify the pricing date and any known contract period. The engineering assessment should not invent a future tariff entitlement or assume that a current arrangement remains unchanged indefinitely.

Build bounded price cases

Use clearly labelled scenarios for future energy prices and export value, with the owner's approved assumptions. Keep real or nominal price conventions consistent with discounting. Do not add inflation and a nominal escalation factor in a way that counts the same effect twice.

Where value varies by time, apply it to the appropriate generation and consumption intervals. An annual average price can obscure the value of the actual hours in which wind displaces purchases or creates surplus.

Identify the break-even dependence

Show whether the project remains acceptable with flat or less favorable electricity values. If a particular increase is necessary to meet the owner's target, present it as a condition rather than a prediction.

The handover should include tariff evidence, scenario definitions and sensitivity results. This supports a reviewable business case without claiming a guaranteed electricity-price trajectory, an unverified export arrangement or savings that the site has not yet realized.
