Electrical configuration
How should electric-yaw control account for cable twist?
The short answer
Where the design permits cable twist, control should track or otherwise constrain it within the cable arrangement’s approved limits. A yaw-angle value alone may not describe accumulated turns.
Understand the interface decision
A nacelle heading can repeat after a full rotation while the cable’s twist state changes. The design therefore needs a clear relationship between position, rotation history and permitted movement. A slip-ring arrangement may change the boundary, but its presence and capabilities must be confirmed for the actual turbine.
Electric-yaw arrangements differ between turbine designs. These questions describe control and interface reviews, not confirmed MARSTON hardware or operating logic. The relevant machine design, mechanical limits and risk assessment must establish the permitted movement and response.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- The cable-transfer arrangement and its permitted torsion or rotation. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- How accumulated movement is measured or estimated. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Limits and the approved method of unwinding where applicable. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Behavior after lost position, control power or retained movement history. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Accept a documented twist-management strategy tied to the physical installation. Do not infer unlimited yaw from the fact that the nacelle can point in every direction. Reference recovery and manual operation must also respect the relevant cable constraints.
The test evidence should include movement toward a limit and the expected restriction or recovery action. Record accumulated rotation separately from geographic heading if the design uses both quantities.
