Should a condensate-return pump be tied to an electric boiler's immediate power command?

The short answer

Not necessarily. Condensate reaches its receiver after transport through the steam system, and an electric return pump can be controlled by receiver level rather than the boiler's immediate heat command. Production can reduce while condensate still arrives. A boiler-power trace alone therefore cannot establish when the return pump runs or when its service may stop.

Identify the actual return equipment

Confirm whether the installation uses an electric pump, a motive-fluid arrangement or another system. Spirax Sarco describes level-controlled electric condensate recovery; not every condensate pump is an electrical load. Map the receiver, return paths and applicable pump controls. Include boiler feed equipment separately if it is a different duty rather than assuming the names are interchangeable.

Follow delayed and cyclic return

Record incoming condensate behavior and pump input over a complete operating change, including the period after heat production reduces. A pump can operate intermittently at a higher instantaneous flow than the average arriving flow. That distinction matters for both the electrical event profile and the accepted hydraulic service. Do not assign receiver capacity or permitted waiting time from a generic example.

Separate receiver-level events from boiler firing events in the record. Their timestamps can differ legitimately, so an apparent lag is not automatically a control fault or evidence that the pump is unnecessary.

Keep dispatch subordinate to the return service

Ask the steam-system owner which demand requests, if any, can alter the pump schedule and what response applies when electrical supply is unavailable. Do not propose disabling level control or delaying required return simply to match wind. Provide the actual pump type, level-controlled sequence and measured input with the enquiry. Wind contribution and steam-system acceptance require separate evidence. A turbine rating cannot validate condensate handling, and this page gives no steam switching, pressure or pump-control procedure.
