Small wind / Buyer questions
Application integration
Can a chiller start whenever a brief wind surplus appears?
The short answer
A brief surplus is not enough to establish a useful chiller start. The actual compressor may require minimum running and off periods, while the water system must absorb the resulting cooling without unacceptable temperature movement. Compare the duration and thermal consequence of the proposed event with the equipment's accepted operating envelope.
Obtain the cycle and water-system requirements
Request the chiller's start/stop restrictions, supported capacity control and required active loop volume. Identify what happens when process demand disappears abruptly. Trane discusses how inadequate water volume and fast-changing loads can cause cycling problems; its example guidance is not a universal minimum for another model. The responsible designer must use the selected unit's applicable requirements.
Check the whole permitted run
Suppose an illustrative dispatch request sees surplus for three minutes, while the accepted operating case requires a longer continuous run. The study must account for input after surplus ends and for the useful destination of the additional cooling. Do not invent a shorter operating permission to make the wind ledger fit. Similarly, a brief off interval may not permit an immediate restart.
A controller accepting a start request is not the same as the compressor being permitted to restart. Retain any supported waiting state so the forecast does not allocate energy to unavailable cooling capacity.
Select the dispatch decision with the operator
A supported thermal buffer or another electricity source may allow a complete run; otherwise the request may need to be rejected. Record both accepted and rejected opportunities rather than counting every positive wind interval as chiller consumption. Include starting capability as a separate electrical review. The enquiry should provide the chiller envelope, active hydraulic arrangement and approved cycle policy. A turbine's rated power cannot establish compressor cycling suitability, and this page gives no forced-start procedure or permission to override manufacturer protections.
