Why must a blade pitch angle name its reference line and viewing direction?

The short answer

A pitch number has meaning only relative to a defined line, axis and sign. For a wind-blade assembly, the chord angle at a selected section may differ from a root indexing angle. A measurement can look inconsistent simply because its reference or viewing direction differs.

Name the angle being measured

Distinguish the root attachment index, the local chord orientation and any specified assembly pitch. Twist makes chord orientation vary along the span, so measuring a convenient surface near the tip cannot automatically verify a root setting. A curved exterior surface also needs a defined construction for locating the chord; the angle of a ruler resting on that surface may describe neither drawing quantity.

Reconcile signs before interpreting a difference

Specify whether the observer looks from the root toward the tip or the reverse, and show the positive rotation arrow. In a hypothetical comparison, one report calls an angle +3 degrees from a datum while another uses the opposite viewing convention and calls the same rotation -3 degrees. Subtracting the two numbers would create a fictitious six-degree discrepancy. The transformation must come from the actual drawings, not this example.

Request an inspectable pitch definition

Ask the rotor designer to identify the reference section, chord construction, zero orientation and measurement state in one drawing view. If a fixture measures a root feature rather than the chord directly, require its documented geometric relationship. OpenFAST illustrates separate blade and airfoil frames, without defining MARSTON assembly settings. Accept a pitch comparison only after both results refer to the same physical section and convention; no universal pitch angle or adjustment procedure is supplied here. A comparison sheet can include a sketch of the two reference lines beside the reported angle. This makes an apparently small numerical discrepancy inspectable without assuming that the section chord equals a molded surface tangent.
