Can a sealed bearing replace an open bearing of the same size?

The short answer

Not automatically. Adding seals changes the bearing’s lubrication boundary and can change friction, heat generation and speed restrictions. A sealed bearing of the same envelope size may therefore be unsuitable in an arrangement designed for an open bearing with an external lubrication path.

Trace lubricant entry and exit

An open bearing may receive lubricant from the surrounding housing or circulation system. A sealed variant can restrict that flow and retain its own specified fill. The seal type also matters: contact seals and non-contact shields do not create identical friction or contamination barriers. The term sealed is too broad to establish either a lubrication benefit or a compatible replacement.

Check the mechanical and thermal consequences

Seal drag contributes to resisting torque and heat, while the changed lubricant arrangement can alter temperature and maintenance requirements. Adjacent components may also depend on a shared lubricant path. A replacement can therefore affect more than the bearing itself even when its basic dimensions match. Do not assume that removing seals restores the original specification or that additional grease can compensate for an unassessed variant.

Request the complete variant review

Ask the generator supplier to compare the full open and sealed designations, lubricant supply, permitted speed, temperature and required service method. NSK catalogue/replacement information treats seals and operating restrictions as product features; it does not authorize a MARSTON substitution. The practical decision is whether the proposed sealing arrangement preserves the intended bearing environment and connected lubrication paths. Keep an unassessed substitution pending rather than install it as an automatic protection upgrade. An external relubrication port does not prove that lubricant reaches the rolling contacts of a sealed variant. Ask the supplier to trace the actual path, including where displaced lubricant is intended to go.
