Does a catalogue L10 life promise the same life for every bearing?
The short answer
No. L10 is a statistical rating-life designation, not an identical lifetime for every bearing or a service guarantee. For a small-wind component review, ask what population, failure criterion and calculation conditions the quoted life represents before translating it into an operating expectation.
Read the reliability definition
NSK describes basic rating fatigue life in terms of 90% reliability for the defined bearing population and conditions. This does not mean each bearing consumes exactly the same fraction of a fixed life per hour or that the remaining 10% fail at one common instant. It also does not describe every possible failure mechanism, such as installation damage, contamination or an unrelated shaft problem.
Keep revolutions and hours consistent
A rating expressed in millions of revolutions needs a rotational-speed basis to become hours. Variable-speed duty requires its own treatment, rather than dividing by an arbitrary rated rpm. A hypothetical one million revolutions at constant 100 rpm corresponds to about 166.7 hours, purely by unit conversion. That example is not a bearing life prediction and says nothing about any turbine’s actual speed or operating duty.
Request the assumptions with the number
Ask for the bearing identity, load spectrum, speed exposure, reliability convention and any adjusted-life factors included. Distinguish a calculated rating from a warranty, maintenance interval or observed fleet result. MARSTON bearing configuration and life are not established by a general catalogue explanation. The buyer’s decision is whether the quoted statistical quantity supports the intended comparison; a single number labelled life should not be promoted into a promised turbine lifetime or a calendar replacement policy. A supplier’s calculated reliability level should remain visible in comparisons. Two life numbers based on different reliability assumptions do not establish a meaningful ranking until the stated statistical bases have been reconciled explicitly.
