10 kW vs 20 kW Wind Turbines: Electrical Package Review
Moving from 10 kW to 20 kW changes a capacity label, but the project must also establish the actual electrical package. Compare FD7.5-10KW and FD10-20KW by identifying the equipment and interfaces behind each candidate before assuming existing controllers, converters or site connections can be reused.
Compare the complete path from turbine to connection.
The electrical review should name the generator-side inputs, control responsibilities and delivered-output requirements. A matching grid voltage does not establish that the equipment on the other side is interchangeable.
01 / Confirmed facts
Keep known geometry separate from electrical assumptions.
FD7.5-10KW is rated 10 kW and has a 7.5 m rotor; FD10-20KW is rated 20 kW and has a 10 m rotor.
FD7.5-10KW is rated 10 kW and has a 7.5 m rotor; FD10-20KW is rated 20 kW and has a 10 m rotor. Both use electric yaw and GFRP blades. High-temperature copper wire is confirmed for both, while its exact temperature or insulation grade is pending.
The comparison table lists confirmed power, diameter and materials with derived rotor-disc area. It does not provide generator voltage, current, speed, controller ratings or a common converter specification. Those values require the applicable documents for each proposed electrical arrangement.
02 / Two boundaries
Identify generator input and delivered output separately.
For each candidate, prepare a generator-side information sheet and an output-connection sheet.
For each candidate, prepare a generator-side information sheet and an output-connection sheet. Identify the nature of the source, applicable electrical ranges and the conditions represented by each rating. At the output, define the intended grid, independent supply or other actual interface without assuming a topology.
DOE’s distributed-wind explanation describes generation in relation to the connected system. For the purchase review, keep the generator data distinguishable from converter-output ratings so a site value is not copied into the wrong field.
03 / Control duties
Review what changes between the proposed packages.
List the controller, conversion equipment and other identified devices for each option.
List the controller, conversion equipment and other identified devices for each option. Record which equipment is proposed to supervise turbine operation, receive commands and report the required states. Ask for a response on requested functions rather than assuming every controller includes the same features.
Separate equipment capability from the site’s desired behaviour. MPPT, unloading, communications, protection and independent-supply functions must be established for the actual proposal where requested. The current 10 and 20 kW models are not assigned a common algorithm or complete control architecture by this guide.
04 / Reuse decision
Evaluate the actual existing devices.
If a controller, converter or connection already exists, provide its model, serial or version reference, ratings and interface documentation.
If a controller, converter or connection already exists, provide its model, serial or version reference, ratings and interface documentation. Compare those documents against the new candidate. A previous 10 kW device is not approved for FD10-20KW solely because its enclosure or connectors look suitable.
Use a reuse matrix with retained, conditional, replaced or unresolved status for each device. Record the evidence and responsible reviewer behind the status. The separate converter enquiry can address replacement scope without implying that any proposed unit fits automatically.
05 / Site acceptance
Check the capacity the destination can actually accept.
Provide demand timing and the intended site-connection arrangement for both candidates.
Provide demand timing and the intended site-connection arrangement for both candidates. Identify any actual limits or requirements obtained from the network operator or project designer. Equipment capacity, approved export and energy used on site are different records.
Compare accepted energy using matched resource and load inputs when applicable performance evidence is available. Keep curtailment and unresolved connection constraints visible. The larger model should not be credited with useful output that the proposed electrical destination cannot accept.
06 / Procurement scope
Quote the same complete boundary for both candidates.
Request separate equipment schedules naming what is included and excluded for FD7.5-10KW and FD10-20KW.
Request separate equipment schedules naming what is included and excluded for FD7.5-10KW and FD10-20KW. Include interfaces, applicable documentation, installation responsibilities and planned verification. Note customer-supplied devices explicitly so the two prices describe comparable scope.
Send the known device records, connection requirements and reuse matrix with the model enquiry. MARSTON can discuss turbine, controller and converter supply separately; actual ratings and compatibility must be agreed. No standard package, inventory offer or universal interface compatibility is established here.

Compare the confirmed specifications.
Power, rotor diameter, yaw and blade material are confirmed. Circular disc areas are calculated from nominal diameter using A = π × D² / 4; they are not electrical output or ground footprint.
| Specification | FD7.5-10KW | FD10-20KW |
|---|---|---|
| Rated power | 10 kW | 20 kW |
| Rotor diameter | 7.5 m | 10 m |
| Geometric disc area | 44.2 m² | 78.5 m² |
| Yaw | Electric yaw | Electric yaw |
| Blade material | GFRP | GFRP |
Engineering questions.
Do both models have the same generator voltage?
No common voltage is established here. Obtain the generator-side documents applicable to each proposed configuration.
Can I select a converter by 10 or 20 kW alone?
Selection also needs input characteristics, output requirements, operating conditions and control interfaces.
Does a common output voltage prove interchangeability?
It describes only one boundary. Generator inputs, functions and other limits must still match the actual equipment.
Can my existing 10 kW controller be retained for 20 kW?
Provide its identity and documents for review. This guide approves no reuse based on appearance, connectors or the previous installation.
Does the larger model necessarily supply more accepted energy?
Compare applicable performance and acceptance constraints at the actual site. A capacity increase alone does not quantify useful energy.
What should the two proposals show?
Separate device schedules, included documents, customer-supplied items, confirmed interfaces, responsibilities and unresolved compatibility questions.
