Small Wind Grid Connection: Feasibility & Review Inputs
A grid-compatible output rating is only one input to connection feasibility. Confirm the actual operator’s process and assemble a consistent project description before choosing equipment or treating a connection proposal as approved.
Prepare a reviewable connection proposal.
The local operator and responsible electrical designer define the applicable requirements. This page organizes the questions and records needed for that review without assuming a jurisdiction or approval route.
01 / Connection point
Identify where the installation would connect.
Record the site supply arrangement, proposed connection location, nominal voltage, phase arrangement and frequency using the project’s actual information.
Record the site supply arrangement, proposed connection location, nominal voltage, phase arrangement and frequency using the project’s actual information. Identify the existing loads and other generators at that point. Keep a preliminary single-line diagram with the proposal so each party discusses the same boundary.
Separate generator terminals from the converter’s grid-side output. A turbine model or kW label does not describe every electrical interface. The interface-documentation guide helps keep device identity and connection labels consistent across the design and supplier information.
02 / Operator process
Ask for the requirements applicable to this project.
Identify the network operator and connection applicant, then obtain its current application route and required technical information.
Identify the network operator and connection applicant, then obtain its current application route and required technical information. Record any study, document, equipment-evidence or inspection requests with their owner and status. Requirements can depend on location, proposed capacity and the actual network connection.
The DOE project-development handbook includes interconnection as a distinct project step. Its jurisdiction-specific examples are not approval rules for your site. Use the operator’s written requirements and avoid promising a certificate or approved device status that has not been confirmed.
03 / Equipment evidence
Define the converter and protection arrangement submitted.
Prepare an equipment schedule naming the turbine, controller, converter and relevant interface devices, with document revisions.
Prepare an equipment schedule naming the turbine, controller, converter and relevant interface devices, with document revisions. Provide the ratings and supported functions requested by the operator. Identify the party responsible for verifying which product evidence applies to the proposed configuration.
Keep operating functions separate from compliance claims. If anti-islanding, protection coordination, reactive-power behaviour or other functions are required, the supplier and project designer must establish the actual implementation and applicable evidence. Do not infer them from a connector, an output voltage or a generic brochure.
04 / Export & metering
Separate technical acceptance from commercial arrangements.
State whether the project intends self-consumption, export or another operator-approved arrangement.
State whether the project intends self-consumption, export or another operator-approved arrangement. If an export restriction is proposed, identify its measurement boundary, responsible control equipment and the evidence needed to review its behaviour. A statement of intent does not establish a supported limiting function.
Record metering responsibilities and obtain the applicable treatment of purchased and exported energy. Permission to connect, permission to export and payment arrangements are separate questions. Retain these distinctions in the project cost model instead of assuming a net-metering or retail-credit scheme.
05 / Operating cases
Describe normal operation and loss of the grid.
Ask the designer to document the intended response to grid loss, return of supply, equipment faults and control communication loss.
Ask the designer to document the intended response to grid loss, return of supply, equipment faults and control communication loss. Identify the documents and agreed review or test plan supporting those cases. This page provides no protection settings or procedures for energizing equipment.
A standard grid-connected proposal should not be presented as an outage supply without a separately engineered arrangement. Where intentional island operation is requested, review it through the microgrid integration guide, including authority, separation and equipment capabilities.
06 / Feasibility outcome
Keep approval status tied to the submitted version.
Maintain a decision register containing the submitted drawings, operator questions, resolved conditions, outstanding work and the approved or reviewed configuration where applicable.
Maintain a decision register containing the submitted drawings, operator questions, resolved conditions, outstanding work and the approved or reviewed configuration where applicable. If a device or control arrangement changes, identify which review items must be reopened before proceeding.
MARSTON can discuss wind turbines and conversion equipment for the defined project scope. Provide the connection data and operator requirements with your enquiry. Before procurement, distinguish a preliminary technically plausible arrangement from an accepted connection with known local work and commercial conditions.

Prepare the information for this review.
Use the checklist to organise the project information. Mark unavailable items and retain document references.
| Review item | Information to provide | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Connection identity | Site supply, voltage, phases, frequency and diagram | Define the interface being reviewed. |
| Operator requirements | Application route, required evidence and responsible contacts | Use the actual approval process. |
| Equipment schedule | Device identities, ratings, functions and revisions | Match the submission to supplied equipment. |
| Export arrangement | Acceptance limit, metering and commercial treatment | Separate technical and financial assumptions. |
| Review register | Submission version, conditions and unresolved items | Track feasibility through the project changes. |
Engineering questions.
Does a grid-side output rating guarantee approval?
No. The operator reviews the actual connection and required evidence. A voltage or frequency rating is one part of that assessment.
Are the requirements identical in every country?
No. Obtain current requirements from the actual operator and responsible project team; this guide provides no country-specific approval conclusion.
Can I assume export is allowed?
Confirm the intended export arrangement, limits, metering and commercial treatment through the project’s applicable process.
Will a grid-tied turbine supply loads during an outage?
Do not assume that capability. Intentional island operation needs a separately defined arrangement and verified equipment responsibilities.
What if I change the converter after review?
Track the revision and ask which affected conditions or submissions must be revisited. Acceptance must remain tied to the actual configuration.
What should accompany the equipment enquiry?
Connection identity, preliminary single-line diagram, operator requirements, intended export arrangement and the functions or evidence requested from the supplier.
