Anti-Islanding & Intentional Isolated Wind Operation

Anti-islanding and isolated supply describe different engineering purposes. Preventing unintended energisation after a network separation does not establish the ability to power an isolated load. Define which state is required and which equipment is responsible for it.

Separate a protection purpose from a supply capability.

An intentional island needs a defined boundary and service assessment; it is not inferred from an anti-islanding label.

01 / Unintended island

Describe the condition the protection assessment addresses.

An unintended island can arise when a portion of a network is separated from its normal supply while local generation remains connected to that portion.

An unintended island can arise when a portion of a network is separated from its normal supply while local generation remains connected to that portion. The relevant protection assessment concerns how the selected arrangement addresses that condition.

DOE’s microgrid overview distinguishes islanding and intentionally separated systems. Its discussion provides general context, not evidence that a MARSTON converter includes anti-islanding functions or satisfies a particular connection rule.

02 / Intentional supply

Keep controlled isolation as a separate service.

An intentionally isolated system has defined sources, loads and operating responsibilities.

An intentionally isolated system has defined sources, loads and operating responsibilities. Providing its electrical reference and meeting its demand are additional requirements; preventing an unintended island does not establish either capability.

The converter-role guide distinguishes following and establishing a reference. Even a grid-forming description leaves energy availability, output limits and system coordination to be assessed for the actual proposal.

03 / Boundary map

Identify what remains inside the isolated network.

Retain the proposed network boundary and the sources and loads on each side.

Retain the proposed network boundary and the sources and loads on each side. Equipment roles can depend on that boundary. A diagram for one feeder does not automatically describe the separation of the complete site.

Record the devices responsible for separation and protection assessment without prescribing their settings or operation. A meter boundary used for export accounting is also not automatically the boundary of an intentional island.

04 / State matrix

Assess normal states and required changes separately.

List grid-connected operation, the relevant loss-of-reference condition and any requested isolated operation as distinct states.

List grid-connected operation, the relevant loss-of-reference condition and any requested isolated operation as distinct states. Record the selected equipment and available sources for each. Keep unsupported or unresolved states visible.

A state list does not provide evidence of a transition between states. Recovery, reconnection and black start are separate requirements where requested. This guide does not define a switching sequence or a procedure for intentionally creating an island.

05 / Evidence scope

Match a function claim to the actual configuration.

For a claimed anti-islanding function, retain the converter identity, relevant configuration, applicable requirement and supporting assessment.

For a claimed anti-islanding function, retain the converter identity, relevant configuration, applicable requirement and supporting assessment. A generic product-family reference may not establish what the quoted variant implements.

A test label must also match the technology and intended use. Do not borrow a photovoltaic-inverter procedure and declare a wind package compliant. The report guide helps preserve those boundaries.

06 / Project decision

Keep approval and supply promises distinct.

Connection requirements come from the actual operator and project assessment.

Connection requirements come from the actual operator and project assessment. Isolated-load service requires its own defined demand, reference and available source envelope. One document should not be used to imply approval of both subjects without scope evidence.

Bring the operating-state requirements and diagram to the electrical-package review. No MARSTON anti-islanding, black-start or off-grid supply capability is established by this explanatory page, and no protection thresholds or live tests are prescribed.

Engineering questions.

Does anti-islanding mean an inverter can supply off-grid loads?

No. Prevention of an unintended island and isolated-supply capability are different functions.

Does grid-forming alone guarantee intentional-island service?

No. Energy, load envelope and complete-system coordination still need assessment.

Is a site export boundary always the island boundary?

No. They describe different purposes and may be located differently.

Does a state list prove transitions are supported?

No. Transition behaviour requires its own applicable evidence.

Does the guide confirm MARSTON anti-islanding?

No. The selected converter and actual requirement must be documented.

Are protection settings or islanding tests provided?

No. This page defines review scope without operating or testing procedures.
