Wind Turbine Transport, Delivery & Pre-Installation Storage
A turbine shipment should remain identifiable from dispatch to installation. Organise the package list, delivery responsibilities, condition records and applicable storage instructions so the equipment and its documents can be handed to the installation team without unresolved assumptions.
Track the consignment before planning the installation.
Transport dimensions, handling information and storage conditions need the agreed equipment documents. Rotor diameter and rated power do not establish package size, shipment mass or permitted storage time.
01 / Package identity
Connect each package with the supplied equipment.
Request a packing list that identifies package number, contents, quantity, turbine model and available equipment serial references.
Request a packing list that identifies package number, contents, quantity, turbine model and available equipment serial references. Keep separate devices and accessories identifiable, including controller or converter packages if supplied. Reference the purchase-order and quotation revision defining the consignment.
Record net and gross mass, package dimensions and transport information only from the applicable supplier documents. Distinguish a preliminary estimate from the final dispatch record. This guide specifies neither a standard crate arrangement nor an assumed weight for any MARSTON model.
02 / Delivery scope
Assign the work at each handover point.
Identify who arranges carriage, receives the consignment, provides unloading resources and reports discrepancies.
Identify who arranges carriage, receives the consignment, provides unloading resources and reports discrepancies. Record the agreed delivery location and the responsibilities established in the actual commercial terms. Avoid assuming that an equipment delivery includes unloading, inland transport or installation.
Provide the access route, gate and unloading-area constraints to the logistics and installation teams for review against confirmed shipment data. The responsible parties should define their handling plans using the applicable instructions. This page provides no lifting points, sling arrangement or unloading sequence.
03 / Arrival record
Keep the package and condition evidence together.
Create a receiving entry with arrival time, carrier reference, package identity, received quantity and the observed external condition.
Create a receiving entry with arrival time, carrier reference, package identity, received quantity and the observed external condition. Where applicable, compare transport-unit or seal identifiers with the documents. Retain labelled photographs and note which contents have not yet been assessed.
UNECE’s CTU guidance distinguishes receipt records and notification of damage within the transport chain. Document discrepancies through the agreed reporting process; do not turn a visual receiving check into confirmation that every internal component is undamaged or installation-ready.
04 / Storage conditions
Obtain requirements for the actual stored components.
Identify the planned storage location and duration, packaging status and environmental exposure.
Identify the planned storage location and duration, packaging status and environmental exposure. Request the supplier’s applicable temperature, moisture, support, preservation and inspection requirements. Separate requirements for blades, mechanical assemblies and electrical devices when the documentation does so.
Storage conditions differ from operating and transportation conditions. IEC’s public storage classification description provides this general distinction; it does not establish a MARSTON storage class. Use the supplied instructions rather than invent a maximum storage period or copy another manufacturer’s preservation procedure.
05 / Status changes
Track any event between arrival and installation.
Maintain a location and condition log for packages moved, opened, exposed or otherwise changed during storage.
Maintain a location and condition log for packages moved, opened, exposed or otherwise changed during storage. Record the date, responsible party, available observation and instruction reference. Link a discrepancy to its package and equipment identity instead of describing it only as a site problem.
If the planned duration or environment changes, ask the supplier which requirements need review. Mark unresolved damage, missing items or preservation questions in the readiness record. Packing appearance alone must not be used to conclude that a changed storage situation remains acceptable.
06 / Handover
Provide the installation team with the current records.
Hand over the reconciled packing list, device identities, applicable transport and storage instructions, condition log and documented dispositions of discrepancies.
Hand over the reconciled packing list, device identities, applicable transport and storage instructions, condition log and documented dispositions of discrepancies. Identify any materials or documents still missing. Keep the equipment version consistent with the commissioning configuration record.
For a delivery enquiry, provide the selected turbine, requested equipment scope, destination and known route or storage constraints. Ask MARSTON to confirm the available shipment data and instructions in the proposal. Packing specifications, lead times and damage-resolution terms require a specific agreement.

Prepare the information for this review.
Use the checklist to organise the project information. Mark unavailable items and retain document references.
| Review item | Information to provide | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Consignment record | Package number, contents, quantities and purchase-order revision | Reconcile the supplied equipment. |
| Confirmed shipment data | Final mass, dimensions and applicable handling references | Support the logistics review. |
| Handover responsibilities | Carrier, receiver, unloading and discrepancy-reporting roles | Define who handles each stage. |
| Storage plan | Location, duration, packaging and applicable instructions | Identify preservation requirements. |
| Readiness record | Condition evidence, missing items and resolved dispositions | Prepare installation handover. |
Engineering questions.
Can rotor diameter determine crate dimensions?
No. Obtain the packing information for the actual supplied assembly and consignment.
Are unloading and local transport included?
Their responsibilities follow the specific proposal and delivery terms. They should not be assumed from equipment supply.
What should be recorded when goods arrive?
Package and carrier identity, quantity, external condition, photographs, discrepancies and the limits of the receiving assessment.
How long can a turbine be stored before installation?
Use the supplier’s component-specific instructions and proposed conditions. This page establishes no universal duration.
Does a complete packing list prove installation readiness?
Readiness also needs applicable condition, storage, documentation and discrepancy records.
What if the storage plan changes?
Record the change and request review of affected preservation or inspection requirements before treating the equipment as ready.
