Wind Turbine Generator Design

The generator connects rotor motion with the electrical system. MARSTON's five turbine models use copper winding wire specified for elevated-temperature service. Generator architecture, winding insulation and operating limits remain model-specific. The FD14-50KW provides a documented example of a brushless permanent-magnet direct-drive configuration.

From rotor torque to electrical output.

A generator specification connects mechanical input with electrical output: speed and torque on one side, voltage, current and power on the other. The controller and converter must be considered alongside the generator.

01 / FD14-50KW architecture

A direct connection to the generator.

The 50 kW model uses a brushless permanent-magnet direct-drive generator.

In the FD14-50KW, the turbine rotor drives the generator directly. There is no speed-increasing gearbox between the wind rotor and generator. The permanent-magnet rotor and stator windings form the electromagnetic conversion system.

The generator and yaw drive perform separate jobs. The generator converts shaft power into electricity. The yaw motor turns the nacelle to orient the turbine. A shared electric-yaw product family does not mean every model has identical generator construction.

Mechanical input

The generator operates with the speed and torque delivered by the rotor. These are part of the model specification.

Electrical output

Generator terminals are one measurement boundary. Power after conversion is a separate system measurement.

02 / Copper and insulation

Treat temperature as a complete specification.

All five models use copper winding wire intended for elevated-temperature service.

Current flowing through winding resistance produces heat. The copper conductor, its electrical insulation and the heat-removal path therefore work together. The wire's thermal rating is only one part of the winding system.

Insulation class, allowable temperature rise and ambient operating temperature are different specifications. A high-temperature wire description does not mean the whole generator can operate at that temperature outdoors. Numerical wire ratings and model-specific thermal limits need to be established in the applicable technical specification.

Conductor

Copper carries winding current. Conductor dimensions and winding layout form part of the electrical design.

Thermal conditions

Load, cooling and ambient temperature affect winding temperature. A meaningful temperature result includes its test conditions.

03 / Electrical integration

Match the generator to the complete power path.

A rotating rotor and a measured voltage do not alone establish usable electrical power.

For a given permanent-magnet generator, generated voltage varies with rotational speed; loaded operation also depends on current and the connected equipment. Converter input limits and operating conditions must match the proposed generator.

For the documented FD14-50KW grid-connected package, 380 V describes the converter's line-to-line AC output. It is not the generator terminal voltage. Other grid voltages, off-grid loads and third-party equipment require their own defined configuration.

Review winding temperature and insulation class, generator losses and efficiency records and cogging torque and rotor start-up against the identified generator. Compare direct-drive and geared arrangements with the actual mechanical arrangement.

Generator interface

The connection specification should identify generator voltage, current, speed range and cable requirements.

Project interface

The proposed grid or load defines the output requirements. Controller and converter selection completes this interface.

Read each specification at the right boundary.

These distinctions apply when comparing technical documents and defining a project package.

Технические вопросы.

Does high-temperature winding wire prove a particular insulation class?

No. The wire rating and complete insulation system must be identified separately. A thermal class or ambient limit should come from the applicable specification, rather than the material description alone.

Is the generator also the yaw motor?

No. The generator converts rotor shaft power into electricity. The yaw motor provides the movement used to turn the nacelle.

Can I connect the generator to any wind inverter?

Compatibility is not automatic. Generator output characteristics, converter input limits, control requirements and protection responsibilities must match the proposed equipment configuration.
