Wind Turbine Yaw Power Consumption & Net Energy Accounting

Electric yaw has a function within the turbine package, and its electricity use needs a defined accounting boundary. Review the actual devices and records before assigning an auxiliary-energy allowance or comparing net results.

Account for consumption at the boundary where it is measured.

Identify the auxiliary loads included in each meter reading, then retain the timing and method behind any energy deduction.

01 / Scope

Separate yaw electricity use from total auxiliary consumption.

Identify which device or circuit the requested consumption figure represents.

Identify which device or circuit the requested consumption figure represents. Yaw-motor use, controller demand and other package loads should not automatically be combined under one yaw figure. Record the actual device identities and the functions included.

MARSTON’s five current turbines use electric yaw; the current FD14-50KW yaw drive is powered by an electric motor. These facts do not supply a motor-power rating, annual consumption or common duty pattern. The auxiliary-supply guide concerns source arrangements rather than this energy ledger.

02 / Power & duration

Keep instantaneous demand separate from accumulated energy.

Power describes a rate; energy accumulates that rate over time.

Power describes a rate; energy accumulates that rate over time. A motor’s rated input, an event’s measured power and the energy accumulated over a month answer different questions. An energy total needs the included time and actual recording or calculation method.

For variable demand, use a method that represents the changing power and its duration. A command-duration total is not automatically motor running time or measured consumption. A rating multiplied by a guessed duty should remain labelled as an estimate with assumptions.

03 / Operating records

Describe the events represented by the consumption data.

Keep the reported turbine mode, available yaw-event information and represented period with the energy record.

Keep the reported turbine mode, available yaw-event information and represented period with the energy record. State whether events are taken from actual measurements, available system logs or an assumed schedule. Do not imply the package exposes every needed signal.

Wind direction changes and the actual control arrangement can affect when yaw operation occurs. No fixed event rate is assumed here. Comparing two installations needs consistent periods and included functions rather than treating one observed event as a typical year.

04 / Meter boundary

Locate auxiliary consumption relative to the generation meter.

Show where useful-energy output and each included auxiliary supply are recorded.

Show where useful-energy output and each included auxiliary supply are recorded. If the output meter already represents generation after an internal load’s consumption, subtracting that same load again would double-count it. If a load is supplied separately, identify how its energy enters the agreed ledger.

Gross generation, exported energy and a defined net-energy balance are different quantities. Keep conversion losses and external auxiliary use separate unless the adopted boundary includes them together. Use the actual electrical arrangement instead of assuming an internal supply topology.

05 / Net-energy example

Reconcile a clearly labelled hypothetical ledger.

Suppose an illustrative upstream record shows 100 kWh and a separately accounted auxiliary circuit uses 2 kWh over the same period.

Suppose an illustrative upstream record shows 100 kWh and a separately accounted auxiliary circuit uses 2 kWh over the same period. Under a definition that subtracts only that identified auxiliary use, the result is 98 kWh. Other losses or uses would require additional defined entries.

This is arithmetic, not measured MARSTON output or consumption. If the 100 kWh were already recorded downstream of that 2 kWh use, the same deduction would be inappropriate. The number alone cannot tell the reader which boundary was adopted.

06 / Enquiry record

Compare claims using a shared energy definition.

An enquiry should identify the turbine model, actual connected devices, measurement locations and the period under discussion.

An enquiry should identify the turbine model, actual connected devices, measurement locations and the period under discussion. Mark consumption unavailable if there is no applicable record. A lower consumption claim needs comparable equipment duties and evidence, not only a smaller motor label.

Keep the assumptions with projected net energy and retain measured consumption separately from estimates. Historical Daqing hydraulic-yaw material is not direct evidence for the current electric-motor yaw arrangement. This page promises no auxiliary kWh value, net-yield gain or energy-saving percentage.

Engineering questions.

Is yaw-motor rated power an annual consumption figure?

No. Energy requires a represented operating duration and measurement or calculation method.

Does a yaw command log directly measure electricity use?

No. Its signal meaning and relationship to actual operation must be defined; an energy measurement is separate evidence.

Should auxiliary use always be subtracted from an output-meter reading?

First identify the meter boundary. Some readings may already include that consumption.

Does MARSTON publish a verified consumption value here?

No actual motor power, event duty or annual kWh is claimed on this page.

Can one yaw event represent a typical year?

Not without applicable evidence and stated assumptions for the event frequency, duration and equipment.

What supports a net-energy comparison?

A shared definition of output and deductions, identified meter locations, comparable periods and traceable measured or estimated inputs.
