Wind Turbine Control System
A wind turbine control system connects operating information with mechanical and electrical actions. MARSTON's five-model range uses electric yaw. The controller, yaw drive, braking equipment and power converter each have a defined role, with their functions and interfaces established for the selected configuration.
Signals. Decisions. Actions.
Control is easier to evaluate when each function is connected to a device. A useful system description identifies what is measured, which controller makes the decision, and which actuator or electrical device carries it out.
01 / Nacelle orientation
Electric drive for yaw movement.
Yaw movement changes the direction in which the nacelle and rotor face.
The five MARSTON models use electric yaw. In the current FD14-50KW configuration, an electric motor drives the yaw mechanism. This turns the nacelle about the tower's vertical axis; it is separate from the rotation of the blades about the rotor shaft.
In a yaw-control description, wind direction, the orientation target and the permitted drive movement are distinct elements. The fitted sensors, correction thresholds and stopping logic must be identified for the selected control version.
Yaw drive
Produces the mechanical movement used to orient the nacelle.
Control decision
Determines when movement is permitted. Exact thresholds and timing belong to the applicable control configuration.
02 / FD14-50KW configuration
Yaw movement and rotor braking have separate roles.
The current 50 kW configuration combines electric-motor yaw with hydraulic disc braking.
The FD14-50KW yaw mechanism is driven by an electric motor. Its mechanical brake uses hydraulic pressure at a disc brake. An electric linear actuator drives a compact hydraulic pump to establish that pressure, without a separate hydraulic power station.
These are different actuation paths. A project control description must identify when a stop is requested, how the fitted brake is commanded and what conditions permit operation again. The described brake arrangement applies to the current 50 kW configuration.
Orientation
Electric motor → yaw mechanism → nacelle movement.
Mechanical braking
Electric linear actuator → compact hydraulic pump → disc-brake pressure.
03 / Control and conversion
Define the responsibility of each device.
Power conversion and turbine supervision are connected parts of the system.
The generator produces electrical output. Power-conversion equipment adapts that output for the intended connection. Turbine control governs the fitted mechanical and operating functions. A complete package must coordinate these responsibilities through its actual connections and control logic.
Grid loss, loss of control power and a turbine fault are different events. The technical package should describe the response to each, including the devices involved and restart conditions. A communication port alone does not establish remote monitoring or remote-reset capability.
Defined interfaces
Identify signal connections, electrical ratings and equipment responsibilities when combining the turbine with a controller or converter.
Operating information
The supplied display, alarms and communication functions determine what operators can observe and control.
Configuration matters.
Use the model and control version together when identifying the equipment.
| Model / zakres | Specyfikacja | Kontekst techniczny |
|---|---|---|
| 5–50 kW turbine family | Electric yaw | Five current models: FD5, FD7.5, FD10, FD12 and FD14. |
| Current FD14-50KW | Hydraulic disc brake | Compact pump actuated by an electric linear actuator; no separate hydraulic power station. |
| Equipment scope | Project-defined package | Turbine assembly, controller and converter can be discussed as separate supply items; compatibility is configuration-specific. |
Pytania techniczne.
Does electric yaw mean the entire turbine uses electric braking?
No. Electric yaw describes how the nacelle is turned. The current FD14-50KW uses a hydraulic disc brake. The braking system must be identified separately for each model.
Are remote monitoring and automatic fault reset included?
These are configuration-specific functions. Include monitoring, access and reset requirements in the enquiry so the supplied interfaces and operating permissions can be defined.
Can I specify a controller or converter separately?
Yes, MARSTON can discuss separate supply. Provide the turbine details, electrical characteristics and intended connection so the equipment and control interfaces can be matched.
