Wind Turbine Generator Data: Speed, Voltage & Load

Generator voltage is meaningful only with a measurement location and operating condition. Use speed, voltage, current and load information together when reviewing the input requirements of a controller or converter.

Read generator data as a set of operating conditions.

Keep shaft speed, electrical measurement point and load condition with every curve or rating used for equipment matching.

01 / Machine identity

Start with the exact generator configuration.

Record the turbine model, generator identity and applicable drawing or specification revision.

Record the turbine model, generator identity and applicable drawing or specification revision. Identify whether the quoted data refer to the bare generator or a package including conversion equipment. Rotor diameter and turbine rated power do not by themselves define generator input voltage or frequency.

For the current FD14-50KW, the confirmed generator arrangement is brushless permanent-magnet direct drive. This confirmation should not be transferred to the four other models without their applicable records. The generator technology page describes the product information already available.

02 / Speed & voltage

Keep the speed reference with the voltage value.

For a fixed permanent-magnet machine configuration, generated electromotive force depends on rotational speed.

For a fixed permanent-magnet machine configuration, generated electromotive force depends on rotational speed. This general principle does not provide a MARSTON voltage-per-rpm value. Request the model’s applicable characteristic data and identify whether the speed refers to the rotor, generator or another defined shaft.

A voltage entry should state AC or DC, measurement location, voltage basis and the conditions of the observation. For an AC machine, record the associated frequency information where available. Do not convert a catalogue value into a full operating curve by assuming a constant ratio without the machine data.

03 / No-load data

Distinguish generated voltage from delivered power.

A no-load observation identifies a condition with no useful external load as defined by the test.

A no-load observation identifies a condition with no useful external load as defined by the test. It can help describe the machine characteristic, but a voltage reading in that condition does not establish power available to a project load. Retain the definition of the connected measurement equipment and test arrangement.

This is a request for existing test information, not an instruction to disconnect an operating turbine or perform an open-circuit test. Such tests belong to an approved model-specific method. A video displaying voltage without speed and load context leaves the equipment-selection question unresolved.

04 / Loaded points

Review voltage, current and speed together.

Ask for loaded operating points covering the range relevant to the proposed controller.

Ask for loaded operating points covering the range relevant to the proposed controller. Each point should identify shaft speed, terminal voltage, current and the connected load or converter condition. Separate directly measured quantities from calculated values, and retain the calculation assumptions.

The relationship under load can differ from a no-load characteristic because the machine and connected equipment introduce losses and constraints. For a three-phase AC calculation, a voltage-current product alone is incomplete without the applicable power definition. Prefer measured electrical power with a stated instrument and boundary.

05 / Conversion boundary

Keep the output connection separate from generator terminals.

Generator-side AC, rectified voltage and converter output describe separate boundaries where those stages exist in the actual package.

Generator-side AC, rectified voltage and converter output describe separate boundaries where those stages exist in the actual package. A converter may regulate its output while its generator-side conditions vary. Use the real interface drawing instead of assuming that a stable output label also describes the rotating machine. The existing PMSG power-conversion article provides the wider conversion context.

Align the generator characteristic with controller input ranges, current limits and the accepted operating envelope. Supplier review should identify gaps where the proposed device cannot support a required condition. The interface schedule provides a place to retain these boundaries.

06 / Data handover

Prepare characteristics that another engineer can interpret.

Keep the machine identity, measurement diagram, operating-point table and test limitations together.

Keep the machine identity, measurement diagram, operating-point table and test limitations together. If an existing installation supplies data, include timestamps, speed source and connected-device identities. State which operating conditions are missing rather than fill them by interpolation without approval.

For a technical enquiry, provide the selected turbine, intended output destination and existing converter information. High-temperature copper winding wire is confirmed across the five models, but the exact insulation and temperature class remains to be confirmed. Material description alone does not establish the full generator operating envelope.

Engineering questions.

Does generator voltage increase with speed?

Generated electromotive force depends on speed for a fixed permanent-magnet machine configuration. The exact terminal relationship and allowable range require the model’s characteristic data.

Can no-load voltage establish rated power?

No. Delivered power requires loaded electrical measurements and their operating conditions.

Is converter output voltage the generator voltage?

They refer to different interfaces. Identify the location and conditions of each rating.

Are all five MARSTON generators confirmed as permanent-magnet direct drive?

The current FD14-50KW has that confirmed arrangement. Use the applicable records before assigning the same generator type to another model.

Does high-temperature copper wire confirm an insulation class?

No exact class is stated here. Winding material and the complete machine’s thermal rating require separate confirmation.

What is the most useful information for converter selection?

The generator identity, applicable loaded characteristics, electrical limits, measurement definitions and intended output arrangement.
