Small Wind Turbines in Coastal Environments
A coastal wind project needs an environmental review of the complete installation. Describe the exposure and obtain evidence for the actual components, connections and equipment locations before treating a standard turbine package as suitable for the site.
Review the exposure and the evidence component by component.
A coastal location is a project condition to assess. It is not a confirmed corrosion grade, enclosure rating or service-life guarantee for the current MARSTON range.
01 / Exposure record
Describe more than the distance to the sea.
Provide site coordinates, the proposed turbine and cabinet locations, prevailing exposure directions and information about salt deposition, moisture, rain and temperature.
Provide site coordinates, the proposed turbine and cabinet locations, prevailing exposure directions and information about salt deposition, moisture, rain and temperature. Identify sheltering, drainage and service access. State the source and date of available environmental information.
Distinguish a land-based coastal installation from an offshore or directly wave-exposed installation. Record unusual flooding, spray or immersion conditions as separate design questions. Do not turn a distance-to-shore value into a corrosion classification without the responsible assessment and evidence.
02 / Component map
Track materials, finishes and exposed connections.
Request a component-level record identifying exposed structures, fasteners, turbine housings, tower interfaces and electrical enclosures.
Request a component-level record identifying exposed structures, fasteners, turbine housings, tower interfaces and electrical enclosures. Where relevant, obtain material and finish specifications and the supplier responsible for them. Keep assembled joints and cable entries within the review.
Glass-fibre-reinforced blades are confirmed across the current five models, but the blade material does not establish the environmental suitability of every metal connection or electrical component. Review the actual assembly instead of assigning one material claim to the entire system.
03 / Coating evidence
Connect a report to the supplied surface system.
If corrosion protection is specified, request the applicable substrate, preparation, coating system, application evidence and inspection criteria.
If corrosion protection is specified, request the applicable substrate, preparation, coating system, application evidence and inspection criteria. Retain component identity, specification revision and supplier confirmation. A colour or a photograph does not define the protection system.
A test report should identify specimens, preparation, exposure method and assessment criteria. ASTM B117’s public scope explains that salt-spray testing alone should not be used to predict natural-environment performance. Test hours therefore must not be presented as a fixed coastal service life.
04 / Enclosures
Review the installed entries and environment.
Obtain environmental documentation for the actual cabinet, connectors and cable entries, including the installation conditions under which a stated rating applies.
Obtain environmental documentation for the actual cabinet, connectors and cable entries, including the installation conditions under which a stated rating applies. Discuss moisture, condensation, heat and maintenance access with the equipment designer. An enclosure rating and corrosion evidence answer different questions.
Identify cabinets located indoors, under shelter or in direct exposure in the interface and layout record. Ask which installation details are needed to preserve the quoted equipment envelope. No common IP or salt-mist rating is established here for MARSTON equipment.
05 / Service planning
Define observation and maintenance responsibilities.
Ask the turbine, tower and electrical suppliers to identify the applicable service instructions and coastal-condition limitations.
Ask the turbine, tower and electrical suppliers to identify the applicable service instructions and coastal-condition limitations. Agree the observations and records required for finishes, connections and enclosures. Keep site access and the response to an unresolved condition in the service scope.
Cleaning products, repair materials, service intervals and acceptance thresholds must come from the applicable instructions. This page provides no coating-repair method or accelerated inspection interval. Use consistent condition records and refer a change to the responsible supplier or service reviewer.
06 / Proposal review
Keep environmental suitability separate from energy suitability.
Send the exposure description, component layout, available environmental data, wind-resource information and intended service arrangement.
Send the exposure description, component layout, available environmental data, wind-resource information and intended service arrangement. Identify any requested coating, material, enclosure or test requirement. Ask for a written response showing confirmed scope and unresolved evidence gaps.
A site can have a promising wind resource while still needing unresolved environmental design work. Review both before procurement. The site-exposure guide addresses obstacle effects; a corrosion review does not replace wind or structural assessment.

Prepare the information for this review.
Use the checklist to organise the project information. Mark unavailable items and retain document references.
| Review item | Information to provide | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Site exposure | Locations, shelter, salt, moisture and unusual spray conditions | Define the environment being assessed. |
| Component scope | Structures, finishes, joints, enclosures and supplier identities | Review the complete installation. |
| Protection evidence | Specification, report scope and acceptance criteria | Connect claims to supplied components. |
| Installation details | Cabinet locations, entries, drainage and access | Identify interface responsibilities. |
| Service & gaps | Applicable instructions, response responsibilities and open questions | Make the proposal conditions explicit. |
Engineering questions.
Are MARSTON turbines automatically approved for coastal sites?
Suitability requires the actual exposure and component evidence to be reviewed. No universal coastal approval is stated here.
Does fibreglass mean the whole turbine is corrosion-proof?
Blade material does not establish the protection of metal parts, joints, electrical equipment or the assembled installation.
Do salt-spray test hours predict years of service?
A test’s method and limitations must be retained. Salt-spray hours alone do not establish a natural-environment service-life conversion.
Is an IP rating a corrosion rating?
Ingress protection and corrosion evidence address different properties. Review the documents and installation conditions for each.
Can a coastal package be assumed suitable offshore?
Offshore, wave exposure and immersion introduce separate conditions. They require their own design and evidence review.
What should I send for a coastal enquiry?
Provide exposure and layout information, wind resources, requested environmental requirements, available evidence and service responsibilities.
