Wind Turbine Yaw Bearing & Flange Interface Review
A yaw interface combines controlled rotation with a structural connection. Review the bearing arrangement, mating surfaces, fastening requirements and load information for the selected turbine and tower configuration.
Define both the moving joint and its structural connection.
Use interface drawings and load responsibilities to review the turbine, yaw assembly and tower as a coordinated mechanical package.
01 / Assembly boundary
Separate the yaw bearing from other rotating parts.
The yaw connection allows the nacelle to change orientation relative to the tower.
The yaw connection allows the nacelle to change orientation relative to the tower. It differs from the main rotor bearing, which supports the rotating drivetrain. Name the relevant assembly in a drawing and mark the fixed and moving sides so that a discussion of bearing design refers to the correct joint.
A yaw motor, drive gear, bearing and mounting flange perform different roles within the assembly. The actual combination must come from the current design documents. This guide does not identify a common bearing type, tooth arrangement or interchangeable part for all MARSTON models.
02 / Geometry
Review the complete mating-interface drawing.
Ask for the controlled dimensions needed to connect the turbine package to the tower-side structure.
Ask for the controlled dimensions needed to connect the turbine package to the tower-side structure. Relevant drawing fields may include mating diameters, hole patterns, surface requirements, orientation marks and clearance envelopes where they apply. Use the issued drawing instead of measuring a photograph.
Two flanges can appear similar while differing in fastener pattern, allowable geometry or assembly requirements. A common rotor diameter or power class is not an interface approval. The turbine and tower suppliers should resolve the applicable drawing revisions before procurement.
03 / Loads
Assign responsibility for the structural review.
The responsible engineers need the turbine load information and the tower-side design conditions applicable to the assembly.
The responsible engineers need the turbine load information and the tower-side design conditions applicable to the assembly. Clarify the coordinate system, load reference point and conditions represented by supplied data. Keep normal-operation, exceptional and transport or installation information identified according to the actual design package.
A bearing capacity figure alone does not confirm the complete joint. Ask who reviews the bearing, supporting structure, flanges and fastened connection together. Do not infer an approved tower or foundation from a component catalogue entry. See the tower planning guide.
04 / Assembly rules
Retain the specified conditions for the joint.
The applicable instructions should define fastening, mating-surface preparation and inspection requirements.
The applicable instructions should define fastening, mating-surface preparation and inspection requirements. Record the document containing those values and which party performs the work. Torque, preload, bolt grade and tolerance values must come from the actual assembly design; this page supplies none.
If lubrication, sealing or other service provisions apply to the selected bearing, identify their documented requirements and access needs. A supplier’s generic bearing publication provides context, not the approved assembly or maintenance method for a MARSTON turbine.
05 / Rotating interfaces
Review clearance and cable responsibilities.
Use the current assembly documents to identify clearances between moving equipment and fixed structure.
Use the current assembly documents to identify clearances between moving equipment and fixed structure. Where the turbine arrangement includes cables or other services crossing the yaw interface, ask how movement is accommodated and which limits and service requirements apply.
Do not assume unlimited rotation, a slip ring or a cable-unwinding function from the words electric yaw. Keep these questions with the electrical interface and control review. Hardware geometry and permitted yaw operation need consistent definitions in the supplied package.
06 / Design record
Keep the installed interface traceable.
Retain the selected assembly identity, interface drawings, load references and agreed installation responsibilities.
Retain the selected assembly identity, interface drawings, load references and agreed installation responsibilities. Record any approved change to the tower connection or yaw assembly as a revision, including the documents affected. Do not treat an informal site alteration as a standard product interface.
For a technical enquiry, identify the exact turbine model and the proposed tower, together with available mounting drawings and project requirements. This page supports a turbine-package review; it does not promise separate yaw-bearing or flange supply, component interchangeability or a custom structural design.

Engineering questions.
Is a yaw bearing the main rotor bearing?
No. They refer to different joints: nacelle orientation relative to the tower and the rotating drivetrain respectively.
Can I identify a matching flange from photographs?
Use controlled interface drawings. Appearance cannot establish dimensions, fastening conditions or structural suitability.
Does a bearing capacity approve the tower connection?
The bearing, supporting structure, flanges and fastened joint need a coordinated review using the applicable load information.
Does electric yaw mean unlimited rotation?
No unlimited-rotation capability is claimed here. The actual movement limits and crossing-service arrangement need confirmation.
Can the same joint be used on all five models?
Use the model-specific drawings and load review. This page does not claim a common interchangeable assembly.
Can I buy the yaw bearing or flange separately?
This guide does not establish a separate component offer. State the requested scope for a project-specific commercial and technical review.
