Wind Turbine EMC: Emissions, Immunity & Assembly Scope
Electromagnetic compatibility concerns interactions between equipment and its electromagnetic environment. Emissions and immunity answer different questions. An EMC document for one component does not automatically cover a turbine, converter cabinet and complete installed system.
Keep the assessed assembly attached to the evidence.
Review what was evaluated, under which conditions and for which environment before extending an EMC claim.
01 / Two directions
Distinguish what equipment produces from what it withstands.
Emissions concern disturbances associated with equipment.
Emissions concern disturbances associated with equipment. Immunity concerns its behaviour when exposed to specified disturbances. Evidence addressing one direction does not automatically establish the other.
IEC publishes separate generic emission and immunity scopes for defined environments. Their public descriptions show why these topics must be distinguished; they do not establish the applicable standard or a MARSTON result for a specific project.
02 / Disturbance paths
Retain the interfaces considered in the assessment.
Disturbances can interact through electrical connections or through fields.
Disturbances can interact through electrical connections or through fields. A review should identify which ports, interfaces and equipment boundaries the evidence represents, rather than treating a label on one power stage as a complete system assessment.
Do not prescribe filters, cable routes or separation distances from a general description. Those are installation and design matters requiring the actual equipment information and responsible project assessment.
03 / Assembly identity
Match the document to the supplied configuration.
Retain equipment model, hardware and firmware where relevant, cabinet configuration and associated components in the assessed assembly.
Retain equipment model, hardware and firmware where relevant, cabinet configuration and associated components in the assessed assembly. A report may describe a component, a populated cabinet or a wider arrangement; those scopes are not interchangeable.
A substitution of a converter, power supply or associated interface can change the configuration being described. Record the change and how applicability was reviewed. Prior component evidence should not silently become a statement covering the revised whole.
04 / Environment scope
Use the intended environment to assess applicability.
The relevant electromagnetic environment and product scope influence which requirements apply.
The relevant electromagnetic environment and product scope influence which requirements apply. A generic industrial label is not sufficient evidence that every site interaction or disturbance has been assessed.
The IEC public scopes also distinguish generic standards from dedicated product or product-family standards. This page does not choose the applicable standard, supply normative test levels or assert certification. That selection belongs to the project’s qualified assessment.
05 / Operating evidence
Keep behaviour criteria and conditions visible.
An immunity result needs a stated behaviour criterion and applicable configuration.
An immunity result needs a stated behaviour criterion and applicable configuration. A record of a disturbance without a defined equipment response does not establish satisfactory immunity. An emissions plot likewise needs its measurement scope and conditions.
Retain the report identity, intended environment, assessed ports and relevant limitations. Use the report-review guide for the difference between a result, a declaration and certification.
06 / System handover
Review interfaces beyond the individual component.
The project review should identify remaining interactions with site equipment, installation conditions and who is responsible for the complete proposal.
The project review should identify remaining interactions with site equipment, installation conditions and who is responsible for the complete proposal. Document scope gaps rather than filling them with an assumption of compatibility.
The document register can retain assembly versions and review status. No MARSTON EMC grade, emissions class or immunity certification is confirmed here, and no field modification procedure is provided.

General background: IEC 61000-6-3 public scope: generic emissions for specified environments · IEC 61000-6-2 public scope: generic immunity for industrial environments. These references explain industry concepts; they are separate from the applicable MARSTON product and project documents.
Prepare the information for this review.
Use the checklist to organise the project information. Mark unavailable items and retain document references.
| Review item | Information to provide | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Assessment direction | Emissions or immunity with intended purpose | Avoid substituting one for the other. |
| Equipment boundary | Component, cabinet or identified assembled system | Match claim and object. |
| Configuration | Versions, associated devices and interfaces | Review changes to the assessed assembly. |
| Environment scope | Intended location and applicable product requirements | Assess document relevance. |
| Report basis | Conditions, criteria, scope and limitations | Qualify supporting evidence. |
Engineering questions.
Does an emissions result establish immunity?
No. They address different directions of interaction.
Can a component EMC document certify an entire installation?
Not automatically. The assessed assembly and scope must match.
Does this guide choose an applicable EMC standard?
No. It explains public scope distinctions for a configuration-specific review.
Can changing a cabinet component affect evidence applicability?
Yes. Review the revised assembly rather than assuming unchanged scope.
Does the page prescribe filters or cable separation?
No. It provides document-review questions, not installation design.
Is a MARSTON EMC certification claimed?
No confirmed certification or EMC grade is stated here.
