Wind Turbine Dump Loads: Functions & Selection Inputs

A dump load is part of a defined electrical and control arrangement. Review where energy is diverted, which device commands it and how its electrical and thermal limits relate to the operating cases of the selected turbine package.

Define the load function before selecting the hardware.

Start with the energy path and operating cases, then review electrical loading, heat disposal and the interfaces to the actual controller.

01 / Purpose

Identify the function assigned to the load.

In a resistive diversion arrangement, electrical energy sent to the load becomes heat.

In a resistive diversion arrangement, electrical energy sent to the load becomes heat. The assigned function may involve surplus-energy handling, voltage limiting or a defined contribution to turbine control. These labels are not interchangeable: identify what the device is required to do in the proposed circuit.

An external manufacturer’s diversion manual illustrates one implementation. It does not establish the MARSTON topology or prove that all five models need an identical load bank. Review the actual equipment list, drawing and functional description before treating a dump load as a standard included item.

02 / Connection point

Locate the load in the proposed electrical arrangement.

Record whether the load connects at a generator-side, rectified, intermediate or another defined electrical point.

Record whether the load connects at a generator-side, rectified, intermediate or another defined electrical point. Identify the switching device and controller responsible for it. A load designed for one boundary should not be moved to another merely because both arrangements use the word diversion.

Request the voltage and current conditions applicable at that point, including the defined abnormal operating cases. Use the electrical interface schedule to show the load connection separately from the project’s useful-power destination.

03 / Operating cases

State when energy must reach the load.

For each proposed configuration, ask how the system handles a reduction or loss of the intended energy destination.

For each proposed configuration, ask how the system handles a reduction or loss of the intended energy destination. In a battery-connected example, a fully charged battery may be one review case; in another installation, a converter restriction may be relevant. These are generic questions, not confirmed behaviours of a MARSTON package.

Record the expected duration, repetition and power conditions for each case. A short event and prolonged diversion impose different thermal duties. Include the required response to unavailable load hardware in the design review rather than assume another device automatically takes over its function.

04 / Electrical sizing

Review resistance and power together.

A steady DC voltage across a resistor gives the general relationship P = V²/R.

A steady DC voltage across a resistor gives the general relationship P = V²/R. This identity shows why resistance, applied voltage and resulting power must be reviewed together. It is not a sizing instruction for a pulsed, three-phase or switched turbine circuit; use the actual waveform and device ratings for that design.

Rated turbine kW alone does not supply the required resistance or duty rating. Ask the designer to establish the load range, switching limits and acceptable generator loading from the selected equipment and operating envelope. A resistor with sufficient nameplate power may still be unsuitable for the proposed electrical interface.

05 / Thermal duty

Treat the diverted energy as an installation heat load.

Distinguish continuous dissipation from the permitted duty of intermittent events.

Distinguish continuous dissipation from the permitted duty of intermittent events. The equipment review should identify the thermal rating, required cooling arrangement, installation environment and limitations stated for the actual supplied assembly. Keep these conditions with the selection record.

Ask who designs the installation space and how the specified heat release affects adjacent equipment. Do not substitute a domestic heating appliance or assume that heat can serve a useful load. Any heat-recovery use would need its own agreed design and operating requirements.

06 / Package review

Include the controller, switching and load as a reviewed assembly.

Keep the load identity and rating with its controller and switching-device references.

Keep the load identity and rating with its controller and switching-device references. The accepted package should identify the commanded operating cases, available status information and the evidence required to check those functions during project commissioning.

For a MARSTON enquiry, state the turbine model and intended output connection, and provide information about equipment already selected. Request the actual unloading or diversion arrangement where applicable. No universal dump-load circuit, resistance value or protection performance is promised by this guide.

Engineering questions.

What does a wind turbine dump load do?

In a defined resistive diversion circuit, it absorbs electrical energy as heat. Its control purpose and connection depend on the actual system design.

Can I calculate a resistance using rated kW alone?

No. The relevant voltage, circuit location, generator loading, switching conditions and thermal duty are also required.

Does a dump load replace a mechanical brake?

Do not assume equivalence. Establish the function of each device within the model-specific control and braking arrangement.

Does every MARSTON turbine use the same load bank?

The actual equipment package and topology require confirmation for the selected model. This guide makes no common-circuit claim.

Can diverted heat supply a building?

Only a separately designed and agreed arrangement could establish that use. It is not a standard heat-recovery function promised here.

What should be requested with a proposed load?

Its identity, electrical and thermal limits, control interface, operating cases and the applicable installation and verification documents.
