50 Hz & 60 Hz Requirements for Wind Power Projects

Generator electrical frequency and the frequency required at a project’s AC output are different quantities. A 50 Hz or 60 Hz enquiry needs a defined output boundary and selected converter information. Turbine rated power or rotor speed alone cannot establish the delivered supply frequency.

Separate machine-side frequency from the required supply.

Make the output-frequency requirement explicit without assuming a dual-frequency product or a country-wide equipment approval.

01 / Machine frequency

Relate generator frequency to its actual design.

For a synchronous permanent-magnet generator, electrical frequency varies with mechanical speed and the number of pole pairs.

For a synchronous permanent-magnet generator, electrical frequency varies with mechanical speed and the number of pole pairs. The maxon generator reference explains this general relationship. Its motor examples are not MARSTON specifications or evidence about a selected wind electrical package.

FD14-50KW is confirmed as a brushless permanent-magnet direct-drive machine. Its direct mechanical drive does not make a fixed-frequency AC site supply follow automatically. The other models’ generator details and every model’s converted output requirements need their own applicable information.

02 / Project output

State where 50 Hz or 60 Hz is required.

Identify the interface at which the project requires the nominal frequency: an existing AC network, a proposed isolated supply or a particular equipment input.

Identify the interface at which the project requires the nominal frequency: an existing AC network, a proposed isolated supply or a particular equipment input. Include the associated voltage, phase description and service conditions rather than providing the frequency label alone.

Retain the requirement source and applicable equipment information. This page does not assign countries to frequency options or establish local connection rules. Actual site requirements and the selected load or operator documents determine the interface to be assessed.

03 / Conversion role

Distinguish conversion from a product capability claim.

An electrical conversion stage can separate machine-side conditions from a downstream supply, but that general concept does not establish what a particular converter supports.

An electrical conversion stage can separate machine-side conditions from a downstream supply, but that general concept does not establish what a particular converter supports. Record the permitted input envelope, specified output and documented operating mode for the selected version.

A rectifier’s DC output has no AC supply-frequency label, while an inverter’s AC output does. That distinction does not prove a regulated DC bus or a compatible conversion chain. Use the rectifier interface guide to keep those boundaries clear.

04 / Reference provider

Identify who establishes the AC frequency.

With an established grid reference, a proposed converter’s synchronisation role differs from the role of equipment supplying an isolated network.

With an established grid reference, a proposed converter’s synchronisation role differs from the role of equipment supplying an isolated network. Identify the reference provider and each device’s documented participation in the required state.

The grid-role comparison addresses reference responsibilities. A statement that a converter can synchronise at a specified nominal frequency does not establish grid-forming, island or black-start behaviour. Treat those as separate requirements.

05 / Equipment variants

Match the requirement to an actual version.

Record the selected converter’s part or configuration identity, firmware and applicable output documentation.

Record the selected converter’s part or configuration identity, firmware and applicable output documentation. Support for one project frequency must not be extended to another without evidence. A product family description may contain options that are not present in the quoted equipment.

Likewise, do not assume a software setting permits a safe change between frequencies or that every connected load accepts both. The interface match must include the actual loads and approved configuration. This is a comparison record, not a procedure for changing frequency settings.

06 / Evidence handover

Keep nominal values and assessed behaviour separate.

A nominal-frequency label describes an intended reference value; assessment records may also describe behaviour under specified conditions.

A nominal-frequency label describes an intended reference value; assessment records may also describe behaviour under specified conditions. Keep measurement boundary, equipment identity, represented operating states and relevant criteria with any result.

Use the power-quality guide for the broader output assessment and send the required interface with a technical enquiry. No dual-frequency MARSTON capability, frequency-quality result or automatic market compatibility is claimed here.

Engineering questions.

Does rotor speed equal the delivered AC frequency?

No. Machine electrical frequency and the selected downstream output interface are different quantities.

Does a direct-drive generator provide fixed-frequency AC directly?

Direct drive describes the mechanical arrangement, not a confirmed project output-frequency capability.

Are all MARSTON converters confirmed for both 50 Hz and 60 Hz?

No dual-frequency capability is confirmed here. Review the actual quoted configuration.

Does a DC bus have a 50 Hz or 60 Hz supply frequency?

Those labels describe AC supply frequency. The DC interface has its own voltage and operating requirements.

Can nominal frequency prove island operation?

No. Reference establishment, source energy and complete-system operating behaviour need separate evidence.

What should be provided for a frequency enquiry?

The required output boundary, frequency, voltage, phase, loads and network or isolated-supply context.
