Wind Generator Bearings & the Mechanical Load Path

Generator bearings, rotor supports and the yaw bearing have different roles. Their names should identify the shaft or assembly they support. A direct-drive description does not establish how every force reaches the nacelle structure.

Follow each load to the part that supports it.

Use the actual assembly boundary to separate torque transmission, radial support and axial location. A bearing catalogue entry is not a complete installed arrangement.

01 / Component roles

A generator rotor is not the complete wind rotor.

Distinguish the blade-and-hub rotor from the rotating part inside the generator.

Distinguish the blade-and-hub rotor from the rotating part inside the generator. Also separate their shaft-support arrangements from the bearing that permits nacelle yaw. The word rotor can describe different assemblies in different documents.

An exploded drawing should name those components and the represented load path. Similar naming or a shared axis does not prove that one bearing carries the actions associated with every rotating part.

02 / Load directions

Radial and axial refer to a particular shaft.

Radial actions are transverse to the defined shaft axis; axial actions are along it.

Radial actions are transverse to the defined shaft axis; axial actions are along it. Their direction and application point need that reference. A tower’s vertical or horizontal coordinate is not automatically the generator-bearing coordinate.

Retain the simultaneous actions and equipment state in any supplied assessment. A single bearing-rating number cannot represent an unknown combination of radial, axial and other assembly actions.

03 / Arrangement

Bearing roles depend on how the system is assembled.

SKF’s generator-bearing discussion distinguishes radial support and axial location, including arrangements that accommodate thermal movement.

SKF’s generator-bearing discussion distinguishes radial support and axial location, including arrangements that accommodate thermal movement. This is a general engineering context; it does not identify the bearing type or arrangement in a MARSTON model.

Ask which component provides each function and how the actual assembly is represented. A bearing part number alone does not specify its mounting, support spacing or the actions transmitted through adjacent components.

04 / Thermal movement

Temperature can affect the assembled support question.

The shaft and supporting structure can change dimensions under different thermal conditions.

The shaft and supporting structure can change dimensions under different thermal conditions. Their relative movement belongs to the bearing-system review, alongside the arrangement and applicable fits defined by the designer.

An individual bearing’s material or temperature statement cannot establish how the full assembly accommodates that movement. The winding-temperature guide covers a separate thermal measurement boundary.

05 / Service evidence

Lubrication and sealing need component identity.

A service statement should identify the actual bearing, sealing and lubrication arrangement and the instruction applicable to that revision.

A service statement should identify the actual bearing, sealing and lubrication arrangement and the instruction applicable to that revision. A generic generator label does not select a lubricant, quantity or service interval.

Do not assume sealed-for-life construction, a relubrication point or a lifetime from a photograph. Operating, environmental and access conditions represented by the supplier’s instructions must remain visible.

06 / Direct-drive scope

Keep transmission and support evidence separate.

FD14-50KW has documented permanent-magnet direct drive.

FD14-50KW has documented permanent-magnet direct drive. That configuration does not alone determine which bearings carry rotor loads or provide a numerical life. Those questions need the actual mechanical arrangement and loading evidence.

The load guide helps identify reference points. This page provides no bearing-removal, lubrication, fit, adjustment or life-calculation procedure.

Engineering questions.

Is the yaw bearing a generator bearing?

No. They serve different assembly and motion functions.

Does direct drive assign every rotor load to generator bearings?

No. The actual shaft and support arrangement must establish the load path.

Can a part number describe the whole assembly?

No. Mounting, spacing, actions and thermal roles are additional information.

Are radial and axial directions universal site directions?

No. They refer to the defined shaft axis.

Is a generic lubrication interval valid for every model?

No. Use the identified component’s applicable instructions.

Does this guide provide a bearing-life claim?

No numerical life or service guarantee is supplied.
